Romane Dicko selected for the Tokyo Olympic Games
The French Judo Federation has made Romane Dicko's selection for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games official, in the 78kg+ category. The Paris Saint-Germain Judo athlete, a two-time European champion, will compete in her first Olympic Games at the end of July.
A precocious phenomenon, Romane Dicko became European senior champion in April 2018 in Tel Aviv, when she was 19 years old. She was then out of the game for more than a year due to injuries.
At the beginning of 2020, the native of Clamart (Hauts-de-Seine) made a remarkable comeback, winning the Tel Aviv Grand Prix, then the Paris Grand Slam. She then retained her European title in November 2020 in Prague, before winning the Doha Masters and the Tel Aviv Grand Slam to kick off the year 2021. The Parisian is currently on an incredible 23-fight winning streak in international bouts.
"The Olympics are every athlete's dream," said Romane Dicko. "I am obviously very happy to be part of the French team and to have the chance to discover this extraordinary competition in the land of judo. I can't wait to be there. I am now focusing on the next few months of preparation, which will be crucial in order to win a medal and represent the colours of France and Paris Saint-Germain to the best of my ability."
'Among the favourites for the Olympic title'
"We are very proud of this selection," said Djamel Bouras, President of the Paris Saint-Germain Judo section. "Romane fully deserves it. Since her return in 2019, after a year's absence due to injury, she has made exceptional progress. She has been undefeated for over a year and is naturally among the favourites for the Olympic title, like Teddy Riner. We hope that they will be accompanied by two other Parisians, Marie-Eve Gahié and Alpha Djalo, whose participation will be determined in the European Championships, in a fortnight' time."
